Directorate of Revenue Intelligence nets gold worth Rs 9.5 crore in 2 weeks

Chennai:  It's raining gold for the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in the state; only that it's the smuggled stuff. The intelligence agency has seized more than 20kg of gold worth 9.5 crore from Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu in the past fortnight.
After a series of raids and arrests, DRI officials said several gold merchants and carriers have been arrested for smuggling gold in large quantities by air and sea route to Chennai, one of the major markets for the yellow metal in the country. In its latest operation, a team of DRI officers seized 7.6kg of gold from Pudukottai near Namakkal on Wednesday.
Officials said the smugglers took the sea route from Sri Lanka to smuggle the item to the Indian coast. "This time, the landing point was near Mumbalaipattinam, a coastal village near Pudukottai. A team of five officers led the operation based on specific intelligence," said a senior DRI official. They arrested four people in this connection.
