Exporters livid after junking perishable cargo

Trichy:  Exporters in Trichy region are livid as their perishable goods had to be returned for lack of phytosanitary documents. For instance, a consignment of 2.5 tonnes of assorted vegetables from Madurai was sent back, while two tonnes of export quality vegetables from Karur were sold in the local market at throwaway prices on Friday.
The question that was raised in cargo circles on Friday was why a replacement was not sanctioned in time after plant quarantine officer G S Giri was transferred to Coimbatore on Monday. Since there is no definitive notification coming from the directorate of plant protection, quarantine and storage in Faridabad, authorizing anyone to sign the quarantine papers, exporters of perishables were in further dilemma because the perishables had to be exported within a given time frame.
