First flight from Myanmar lands in Imphal

Imphal: Imphal on Thursday put itself on the global aviation map with the landing of Myanmar's private airliner, Golden Myanmar, at Tulihal airport.
Adding glory to the historic flight, a 10-day Manipur Sangai Festival kicked off here showcasing the state's rich cultural heritage, indigenous food, sports and packed with a bunch of entertainment programmes. This is the biggest tourism festival in the state.
The Union cabinet had recently given its nod for upgrading the Tulihal airport in the Imphal West district to the status of an international airport and the new global air route operation is a part of the bilateral air service agreement inked between India and Myanmar last year.
Carrying around a hundred delegates, including chief ministers of Myanmar's Saigang and Mandalay regions, Tha Aye and Ye Mint, and cultural troops of the neighboring country, the charter flight from the eastern sky landed here around noon amid heavy security.
