Gold bars worth Rs 1cr seized from three at airport

Mumbai: Officials seized gold bars worth Rs 1.32 crore from three passengers at the international airport on Thursday.
The modus operandi used by the smugglers to conceal the gold was different in the three instances. In the first case, it was concealed in a plane's toilet, while in the other cases, soap bars and torch batteries were used to conceal the metal.
In the first case, gold was concealed in the toilet of an Air-India plane that arrived from Dubai. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials and airport customs on specific information seized four kg gold valued at Rs 1.05 crore.
The passenger, Mohideen Yaseer, holding a Sri Lankan passport has been arrested. He had made 19 trips to Chennai and eight to Delhi in the past. This was his first trip to Mumbai, officials said. "We believe that during his visits to other states, he had indulged in smuggling. We will investigate,'' an official said.
