Gold smuggling a below-the-belt affair

Hyderabad: Gold continues to lure Indians and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), which is the sixth busiest airport in the country, has become the favorite haunt of gold smugglers. Though Dubai has been the traditional hub of smugglers, now, with the customs sleuths profiling frequent fliers from Gulf countries, the smugglers are now bringing in the yellow metal from South Asian countries.
Customs officials on Thursday morning intercepted a small time Vizag-based realtor, M Suresh Kumar, when he landed at the RGIA by a Thai Airways flight (TG329) from Bangkok. He would have been cleared, but as he had travelled twice to Bangkok recently on tourist visa and both the times returned to Hyderabad within two days, customs officials became suspicious.
