Guwahati airport slashes charges to take on Kolkata

New Delhi: Kolkata airport could soon face stiff competition from Guwahati airport in attracting international flights.
Guwahati has announced a uniform set of charges for both international and domestic passengers and airlines to make more use of the capacity of the airport.
Sector regulator Airports Economic Regulatory Authority has approved the new rates last week, which will come into effect from January 1, 2014, in the first year.
"This is the first time in India that any airport has kept uniform charges for both international and domestic passengers. As part of our endeavour to promote regional connectivity in the country, we had asked for uniform charges to bring in more international airlines to Guwahati. The airport is also strategic in terms of its location," said a senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) official, on condition of anonymity.
