Industry objects to new plan for Coimbatore airport

Coimbatore: With the new plan of Airports Authority of India (AAI) to acquire 1,566 acres for Coimbatore airport expansion under consideration by the state government, industrial associations in the city have urged the central government to stick to the original plan which requires only 613 acres. "The government should opt for the original plan as it is more feasible than attempting to acquire 1,500 acres in a single locality close to the city," said Ravi Sam, vice-chairman of CII Tamil Nadu state council.
He said that only when the airport expansion is completed, the city would be able to keep up with the growing demand. AAI has already written to the state government stating that to cope with future traffic demands there should be parallel runways. According to Ravi Sam, the city needs better air connectivity and any further delay in expansion, would affect growth of the entire Coimbatore region.
