Panjim: Against the backdrop of the Lok Sabha poll now being just months away and the ruling BJP fancying its chances of picking up the South Goa seat in addition to the North Goa one it holds given the disarray in the Congress, the greenfield international airport at Mopa that the Manohar Parrikar regime has committed itself to despite significant opposition in the South seems set to get moving only after the poll results are out. For, the BJP-led government is moving at a snail pace over conducting the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study for the project which was announced by the Chief Minister five months ago.
Though the government has finalized Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) as the approved agency to conduct the EIA study, the study itself is likely to kick off only by the beginning of December, a full six months after the announcement. The EIA, incidentally, will take a whole year, as its observations ~ encompassing a wide range of aspects including human health and safety, biodiversity, et.al ~ will have to be conducted through all seasons of the year.
Official sources told Herald that when it is ready, the EIA will have to be submitted to the MoEF to obtain an environment clearance.
