Navi Mumbai airport is finally on the runway

Mumbai: The state government on Monday cleared all hurdles before the Navi Mumbai International Airport project. During a meeting at the Sahyadri guest house, chief minister (CM) Prithviraj Chavan offered the country’s biggest compensation and rehabilitation package to the project-affected farmers. The first phase of the airport is expected to be functional in three-and-a-half years.
“We have offered 22.5 per cent developed land plus an FSI of 2 to those affected. We will also give them triple the size of their plots to construct houses. The minimum size of the house will be 40 metres. As construction cost, the state will offer them Rs1,000 per square metre. The proposal has been accepted by the delegation of farmers who were part of the meeting,” Chavan said.
The Navi Mumbai airport will need 2,072 hectares of land of which the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has yet to acquire 475 hectares. This was one of the reasons for the project getting delayed. The project cost shot exponentially during this period.
“The initial cost was Rs4,000 crore; it is now Rs15,000 crore,” said a government official.
