Pole problem holds up runway expansion

Hubli:  The inordinate delay in the shifting of electricity poles is likely to affect the proposed work of runway expansion. The poles are on the land acquired for the development of Hubli airport.
Why the delay? While Hescom has sought funds from the district administration, the latter is waiting for the government to sanction funds to shift the poles.
According to sources, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the upgradation of Hubli airport at Rs 145 crore in January this year. As per the MoU, work should be completed within 30 months of signing it.
The airport authority had taken up the construction of 13 km stretch of boundary wall a few months back before starting developmental works. K M Basavaraju, director, Hubli airport, said though the electricity poles hindered their work, they were able to complete 8km of the boundary wall.
