Few years ago, the federal government seemed to have fallen in love with private public partnership (PPP), which is a government service that is operated through a partnership with the private sector. It was seen at the time as the panacea to the obsolete airport infrastructure and also the key to developing these airport facilities to meet international standards.
Government made efforts to concession some of the airport infrastructure development to the private sector. Abuja and Lagos airports were to benefit from this arrangement, but after the successful ceding of the then burnt down domestic terminal at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos to be developed by the private sector, government seemed to have developed cold feet about continuing such programme. One of the reasons is that the concession under PPP already done at the aviation sector may not have been done properly and that may explain why the planned concession of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was later revoked by the Late Musa Yar’Adua administration.
