Redevelopment of low income homes hit by aviation rules

Navi Mumbai: Residents of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) buildings are up in arms against the inclusion of aviation rules in the Town Planning Act. This prevents them from redeveloping their chawls and buildings without the nod from Airport Authority of India (AAI).
In the 1980s, Cidco had developed 15,000 chawls and flats as part of its affordable mass housing scheme. But after the state amended the Town Planning Act, the redevelopment of the 30-year-old buildings has been put on hold. "Home owners cannot opt for redevelopment without the permission of AAI. This new rule will cause inordinate delay to the redevelopment process," said Vikram Danaji Shinde, an NCP corporator from Vashi.
Cidco, when building these homes, had given home owners extra FSI so when the families grew, the size of the houses could also change. Any change in the existing structures cannot be done without AAI's approval now.
