Spiti airstrip project to get fresh impetus

Manali: With China strengthening its infrastructure along its border with India, fresh efforts are being made to build a military-cum-domestic airstrip near the 12,000-feet-high Rangrik village of Spiti valley. After confirming the feasibility of developing an airstrip on a hilltop in the cold desert, the matter is being taken up with the defense ministry, which is mulling to put all possible efforts to execute the plan, sources said.
National Commission for Scheduled Tribe, which is concerned about the safety of people close to border areas of tribal Spiti and Kinnaur, has discussed the matter with the state government and defense ministry. Sources said that Spiti and Kinnaur, which have been used for cross-border smuggling for years, are easy target for China.
