Tripura sanctions 72 acres for airport expansion

Agartala: Tripura transport minister Manik Dey on Tuesday said the state government has allotted about 72 acres of land to Airports Authority of India (AAI) to facilitate the Rs 300-crore Agartala airport upgradation project.
However, the Manik Sarkar government's move, which aims to improve air connectivity in the region, has displaced 157 families from the southern and western part of the city airport.
The families have been shifted to the land that AAI had abandoned on the other side of the airport along with a total cash compensation of Rs 30 crore.
The state government has also agreed to acquire 79 acres of land in Kailashahar, nearly 120 km from Agartala, as AAI has agreed to invest in upgrading an abandoned airport there
"If Kailashahar airport is made operational, North Tripura will have direct connectivity with Kolkata, Guwahati, South Assam and the northern part of Bangladesh. It will also reduce pressure on Agartala airport," said Dey.
