Kolkata: An Air India employee was picked up by sleuths from the department of revenue intelligence while he was handing over 7.2 kg gold valued over Rs 2 crore to one A Ali outside the airport terminal on Monday.
Tirkey, the accused, is suspected to be one among several airline employees on the payroll of smuggling networks operating between Bangkok and Kolkata. Less than a month ago, 24 kg gold was accidentally discovered in a Jet Airways aircraft toilet.
Sleuths believe Tirkey was a handler whose job was to recover gold concealed in the toilet or any other part of the aircraft, smuggle it out of the airport unnoticed at a later hour when checking is slack and hand over the consignment to Ali.
