Army seeks land in north Bengal for aviation base

Kolkata: The Army has offered over Rs 10.5 crore to the West Bengal government for 361.11 acres in north Bengal for a Composite Aviation Base (CAB) that will be essential for surveillance of the sensitive Siliguri corridor. Land has already been identified at Shaugaon for the CAB that will house unmanned aerial vehicles.
"Nearly Rs 10.55 crore has been allotted by the Centre for the CAB. This is a strategic asset which has a very important role to play in air space management of the sensitive Siliguri corridor. It will also boost the economy of the area. We have already identified the land. About 228 acres belongs to an abandoned tea garden. Of this, about 97 acres are already in active possession of the Army through hiring. Nearly 34 acres are Rajyati land while 6.2 acres belong to the district board. The remaining 91.92 acres are state government land," an officer said.
