Aviation Ministry Ignores Maharaja, Odisha Suffers

Bhubaneswar: Poor air connectivity to Odisha has proved to be a bane for the tourism sector but the Civil Aviation Ministry continues to ignore the State’s interest by keeping many important routes exclusively for private airlines while national carrier Air India (AI) underutilises itself.
After Jet Airways rolled back its entire operation in the State in October, several important routes are open for AI but the Ministry has turned a blind eye. As a result, some of the high traffic routes are left only to private airlines.
Currently, AI operates two flights to Delhi and one to Mumbai on a daily basis. The Chennai and Kolkata flights have been withdrawn while the Delhi-Bhubaneswar-Port Blair flight connects the State Capital only during its onward journey.
While AI has a limited operation, Indigo connects to all major cities from the State. Apart from the Delhi and Mumbai routes, where the national carrier has its presence, it operates to Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam as well as Chennai. In some of the sectors such as Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, it is the sole flier.
