CCEA Allows Air India to Sell 5 Aircraft to Etihad Airways

New Delhi: To partly offset the over Rs. 20,000 crore debt that the state-run carrier Air India is saddled with, the government on Thursday allowed the carrier to go ahead with the sale of its five long-haul Boeing 777 aircraft to Etihad Airways.
The sale of these Boeing 777s wide-body aircraft is a part of the airline’s turnaround plan and was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) which is headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Etihad recently picked up 24 per cent stake in Indian private carrier Jet Airways for Rs. 2,000 crore and is expected to deploy these six-year old 777s on long-haul routes like Abu Dhabi-Los Angeles from June next year.
