New Delhi: Worried by US warning of icicles forming on certain types of GE engines used on Boeing Dreamliners when the aircraft comes in contact with cumulonimbus clouds, the Indian aviation safety regulator has summoned both the US aircraft major and the engine manufacturer for a meeting on Wednesday. The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) took this step after Air India decided to deploy the Boeing 787 on the Delhi-Tokyo route — a sector from which Japan Airlines (JAL) withdrew this plane citing inadequate maneuvering to get from the cumulonimbus clouds.
JAL said that Boeing wanted B-787 and B-747-8 with the certain GE engines to steer at least 60 nautical miles (about 90 km) away from cumulonimbus clouds. However with China only offering a limited airspace for commercial aircraft, the airline said it could not divert the planes by that distance from those clouds on Delhi-Tokyo route and hence withdrew the plane from this sector.
