Shimla: The project to expand Kullu airport to accommodate bigger aircraft has moved a step further with a team of experts from IIT Roorkee, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and consultants appointed for the project conducting a re-survey of the site to identify points from where the airstrip may be expanded after diverting Beas.
At present, only small aircrafts can land at Kullu airport. As around one kilometer area needs to be added to the airstrip, the team fixed points on the left bank of Beas while it has decided to visit again to fix points on the right bank. Expansion of the airport was mooted in 2010 after the state government asked experts from IIT Roorkee to prepare a feasibility report. The report had suggested that expansion by another 1,000 meters would require around Rs 248 crore of investment.
According to official sources, the team included engineers from IIT Roorkee, experts who prepared the project report, officials from AAI and representatives of the consultants from hired by the government of India.
