Margao: Comparing how the first private airport in Spain led to its economy collapsing, Goans For Dabolim Only (GFDO) predicts a similar disastrous future for the Goan tourist dependent economy if Mopa airport is constructed. GFDO also claims that the capacity of the new Dabolim airport can handle even 14 million passengers, which would be sufficient for the next 25 years
In a statement issued on Monday, GFDO accused bureaucrats and elected representatives of making misrepresentations of Dabolim and Mopa airports, and said that 'the capacity of the new Dabolim terminal at relatively acceptable service levels, is at least nine million passengers per year, assuming high traffic growth.
"With new infrastructure already in place, and cooperation from the Navy assured, doubts about Dabolim airport's capacity have evaporated. On the other hand, the feasibility of a PPP second airport at Mopa is now found to be non-existent," said GFDO convenor Fr Eremito Rebello.
