Improved ILS facility to help landing in poor visibility at Raja Bhoj Airport

Bhopal: There is good news for frequent fliers from Bhopal. Now, aircraft will not be diverted from the Raja Bhoj Airport during winter fog or poor visibility conditions. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has relocated glidepath at the runway to 50 ft and installed improved version of instrument landing system (ILS) to facilitate safe landing of bigger aircraft during very poor visibility.
Planes can land during visibility at runway visual range of 200 meters (660ft) after the new facility becomes operational.
Glidepath at the airport was 45 ft but international standards mandate 50ft flidepath for facilitating landing of bigger aircraft. The ILS facility at the airport was withdrawn for last two months in wake of reworking the glidepath, a vital component of ILS which provides elevation guidance (angle of descend for landing).
Airport director, Raja Bhoj Airport, Vivek Upadhyay told TOI, "Installation of ILS and work on glidepath has already been completed by the specialized team from AAI, New Delhi with support of local officials.
