Maldives new govt to begin developing airport in first 100 days

The new government on Sunday announced its plan to begin developing the Maldives only operational international airport within the first 100 days.
Announcing the governments' objectives for transport and communication sectors within the first 100 days, transport ministry said its main objective would be to expand the airport to cater five million passengers.
It has been decided to expand the airport apron, build a holding facility in order to expand the existing runway and to expand the terminal. The transport ministry will also make arrangements to operate flights to the domestic airports in Fuvahmulah and Thaa Atoll Thimarafushi at night.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed had signed a lease with Indian infrastructure giant GMR to operate and develop the airport. But Nasheed's successor, Mohamed Waheed, had terminated the agreement following pressure from his allies.
