Mangalore International Airport makes concerted efforts to boost air cargo

Mangalore: Mangalore Air Cargo Complex at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) at Kenjar here that handled 35 metric tonnes of export cargo in November is capable of handling 240 metric tonnes per month in future. This can be achieved with cooperation from the airlines operating out of MIA, noted MIA director J T Radhakrishna at a meeting of air cargo, industry stakeholders meeting held at MIA.
D Purushottam, commissioner of customs informed the meeting that M Kannan, economic advisor, Union ministry of civil aviation chaired that his department will shortly establish electronic data interchange connection at the air cargo complex so that the charges can be remitted at the complex itself. At present, the agents have to go to the Customs House at Panambur to remit the duty, he noted.
Purushottam also suggested to the stakeholders that they export vegetables, fruits, flowers and fish to start with and emphasized the need to approach the local industries and convince them.
