Safety concerns may mar Dreamliners' Tokyo flight

New Delhi: Air India has finally got Japan's nod to operate its Dreamliner on the Delhi-Tokyo route. However, Japan Airlines had (JAL) recently pulled out the aircraft from this route after warning from Boeing that B-787s using certain engines should away from cumulonimbus clouds as there had been cases of ice crystals forming on the engine, leading to a loss of thrust.
A JAL official had said that while a Dreamliner must fly 60-70 nautical miles away from such clouds, the Delhi-Tokyo route did not give that kind of space. The reason: narrow airspace given by China for commercial airliners which did not allow passenger aircraft to deviate from their flight path by 60 nautical miles to avoid the cumulonimbus clouds.
