Sandalwood seized at Kolkata airport, Chinese national arrested

Kolkata: A Chinese national was arrested at the city airport late on Saturday with red sandalwood worth around Rs 50 lakh in the Chinese black market.
Barely a couple of weeks ago, customs officials had seized 24kg of gold biscuits, worth more than Rs 7 crore, from the washroom of an aircraft.
Customs officials said they searched the luggage of Ling Jiang Juan - who had arrived in the city from Mumbai - on a hunch because his luggage was unusually large. A search revealed 26kg of red sandalwood, which is worth around Rs 1 lakh in India, but sells for at least fifty50 times that amount in China, said a source.
The incident happened on Saturday night when the custom officials, out of suspicion, checked the huge luggage of Ling Jiang Juan- a Chinese national and recovered 26 kilograms of red sandal wood.
