1st wedding anniversary celebrations end with wife skydiving to death

Bangalore: It was their first wedding anniversary on January 23 and the Bangalore-based couple, Vinod Iyer and Ramya, decided to make it an adrenaline-rush celebration. Instead, it turned into a tragedy as Thursday's skydiving exercise, organised by Indian Skydiving and Parachute Association (ISPA) in Omalur near Salem in Tamil Nadu, resulted in Ramya hurtling down 10,000 feet in a matter of seconds to her death. All this in full view of Vinod.''I thought she would come down with a smile, but she plunged rapidly as her parachute failed to open and she crash-landed on the ground. My heart beat faster as I ran towards her, but she was lying there motionless. She had died,'' recounted 28-year-old Vinod, who quit Sapient India in Bangalore six months back. Ramya was a homemaker.
Preliminary investigations by the Tamil Nadu police have pointed to the negligence on the part of the organiser, Bangalore-based ISPA.
According to the police, the organisers escaped from the spot leaving Vinod behind with his dead wife after the tragic incident. The staff of the ambulance that reached the spot said: ''Vinod kept collapsing looking at his wife's body. There was no one around to explain what had happened or to console him.''
