Chennai: With Airports Authority of India (AAI) gearing up to privatise the Chennai terminals, middle level officials at the facility have started to look for alternative employment as many of them may not get absorbed by the new company.
Their plans range from starting a dairy farm to selling solar panels and getting into real estate business to teaching at an engineering college. A section of employees tasked with management and maintenance at the airport are among the ones who have started to make smart plans to exit. The more efficient ones are hopeful they will be absorbed or find a job elsewhere. The AAI is likely to draw up a shortlist of bidders for privatisation of the facility by end of this month.
Prior to the privatisation, many officials at Chennai airport were informally told by the management that they would be absorbed by the private firm. But many are not ready to believe that.
An executive director at the AAI headquarters in Delhi said the deal is likely to ensure 100% absorption, same wage scale and an extra deputation allowance. "AAI might continue as disciplinary authority. A few may be transferred to smaller airports. Efficient hands need not to worry as there is a window open for them in the private sector," he said.
