Airports Authority of India chairman relieved from post

New Delhi: The uncertainty dogging top aviation posts continues unabated. Late on Thursday night, the government relieved Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman V P Agrawal from this post. The additional charge as AAI chief was given to Alok Sinha, a joint secretary in aviation ministry who is a UP cadre IAS officer of 1986 batch.
Agrawal's five-year tenure as AAI chief had ended on December 31, 2013. However, he still had one-and-a-half years to reach the retirement age of 58. Now the government has given additional charge to an aviation ministry official.
Despite knowing well that the key positions of AAI chairman and Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will fall vacant on December 31, the aviation ministry did not start the process in time to have regular incumbents in these positions. The recommendation for appointing ministry joint secretaries Prabhat Kumar and Alok Sinha as DGCA and AAI chief, respectively, were sent so late that the PM-headed cabinet committee of appointments (ACC) could not take any decision in time.
