Case against GMR strong, insists Maldives

The Maldives' case in the arbitration row with India's GMR over Male airport is strong, newly appointed Attorney General (AG) Mohamed Anil said Sunday.
In an exclusive interview with Haveeru, Anil said arbitration is going on in Singapore at a fast pace, and that if things move as they are scheduled now, hearings will be ready by April or May. The arbitration shall be over this year, he added.
Anil noted that discussions are going on with GMR outside the arbitration in order to go for an out of court settlement. He said these discussions are held to prepare for the upcoming formal meeting to decide on specific terms of the settlement.
"The first thing is to decide on an amount. At the same time, to contemplate what shall be given along with it. For example, if the financial amount should be paid at once or in instalments; if something else can be arranged for the company in Maldives in relation to the restoration compensation and assess the options, -all non relative to the airport", Anil said, in his first interview since assuming office in November.
