New Delhi: Airports across the country may soon be equipped with indigenously developed state-of-the art runway visibility measuring system ‘Drishti’ to provide information to pilots for safe landing and take offs during foggy weather.
The India Metrological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is in the process of inking a partnership with the Bangalore-based National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) for production of the indigenous runway visibility range (RVR) system.
The automatic system, which costs just over one-third of the presently imported systems which costs Rs 20 lakh, is in the trials at the Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The trials are held parallel to the existing system.
“In total, seven RVR systems were installed for trials and we found them to be at par and at some places exceedingly better than the imported and costlier RVR systems. Following this we have decided to push for Drishti’s installation at all airports across the country,” said a senior MoES official.
