Panaji: Gold smugglers are possibly using the 'NRI route' lately, where around one kilo of gold is brought in by non-resident Indians and declared on arrival at the airport.
They get away by paying the duty of around 2.5 lakh as per regulations, VPC Rao, commissioner for central excise and customs, Goa said on Monday.
"Last two to three months, there has been a lull in gold seizures in Goa. This is because the smugglers could possibly be using the NRI route. I often see quite a queue at the Dabolim airport to declare gold. This appears to be the new modus operandi as the smugglers know that the customs checks have become more stringent after many major seizures were made last year," Rao said.
