Mumbai: In a modus operandi detected by the Customs for the first time, an Indian was arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit at Mumbai airport for carrying gold concealed in a tin of talcum powder.
AIU sleuths discovered a new method of smuggling when they intercepted the gold weighing 1.045 kg and valued at Rs 26.45 lakh cleverly concealed in Yardley powder boxes.
"The gold was in the form of metallic sheets coated with silver colour paint," A P S Suri, commissioner of Mumbai Airport Customs, said.
Sources said that Customs officials at first could not spot anything amiss. But as they had received a tip-off, they manually inspected the talcum powder tin that was being carried by M K Sathar, a native of Kerala. Sathar had arrived from Dubai by Indigo Airlines flight 6E-62.
