New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, India's public sector manufacturer of civilian and defence aircraft parts and systems, has issued a Request for Information (RFI) from global suppliers of aircraft engines for a proposed 70-100 seater commercial aircraft that is slated to commence production in 2020. The RFI was issued on December 23, 2013.
Canada's Bombardier and Brazil's Embraer have a near duopoly on passenger craft in this size category. The government feels that India has the capacity to produce indigenous aircraft of this size. HAL will form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with the other public sector aerospace firm, National Aerospace Laboratories to undertake production of the aircraft. There are several companies in the private sector that are capable of taking part in such a venture, producing sub-assemblies.
