Lack of clarity on airport privatisation could hit growth

Chennai: Privatisation of Chennai airport has got delayed further. Those protesting against privatisation may be happy, but lack of a clear decision could affect quality as no major decisions on development are being taken. The date for accepting requests for qualification has been put off to January 28.
Sources said companies keen on bidding for the airport sought more time to finalise proposals. The planning commission also did a revaluation of the airport and its assets.
A parliamentary standing committee has criticised the ministry for trying to give away the airport "on a platter" which will be a "disservice by using public property for private profits". This is among the reasons for the ministry going slow on the proposal.
