MIAL explores tunnel option to link domestic terminal with T2

Mumbai: Mumbai airport may become the first in the country to have an underground tunnel for airside vehicular movement. A plan is under consideration to build a tunnel linking domestic terminal to T2, its new integrated terminal, to improve operational efficiency in the airport and reduce delays in departures and baggage delivery.
A Mumbai International Airport Limited  (MIAL) spokesperson said the plan to construct the tunnel had not been finalised. "We do not wish to comment as no plans have been firmed yet,'' a MIAL spokesperson said in an email response to queries.
Other cities including London, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur have underground road or rail lines passing under the airport, some connecting the terminals and others for general motorists.
The reason behind planning a tunnel for airside vehicular movement in Mumbai  is that it will reduce congestion on the perimeter road and apron.
