Mumbai airport to get two hi-tech DFMDs

Mumbai: The customs department will get two brand-new Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMD) by the time the new T2 becomes operational at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA). However, the total number of DFMDs will remain the same at four as the new ones will replace two older machines currently being operated.
Metal detectors have been instrumental in detecting two cases of gold smuggling this month alone with `45 lakh of the yellow metal being seized. “We have intimated our request to the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which will procure them. Currently, we are using four and the two new machines will be used to replace two from the original inventory,” said additional commissioner (Air Intelligence Unit) Milind Lanjewar. The machines, manufactured by California-based Rapiscan, cost between `1 to 5 lakh each, according to customs officials.
Scanning machines had helped bust Shaikh Masood Rehman, who had wrapped two gold bars in carbon paper and hid it inside his cabin baggage. It was found in the baggage-scanning machine. A personal search also revealed two more gold bars in his undergarments.
