Akola: Extending the runway of Shivni airport will harm agricultural research and Akola's claim to fame - Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). Former vice-chancellor of PDKV Dr Balwantrao Bathkal expressed fear that the existing infrastructure including research work of the University at Akola would be destroyed if the runway extension plans is undertaken. The proposed runway, if extended, would go up to Rashtriya School in Umri village.
PDKV VC Raviprakash Dani felt that shifting of airport is the only alternative. "It would be a headache for the people if the expansion plan was implemented. The best alternative is to build a new airport in between Borgaon Manju and Sonala on NH-6," he said.
