Ahmedabad: To stop birds from thriving around Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and secure aircrafts from bird-hits, Airport Authority of India (AAI) had launched a campaign 'SAVE- Save Avians and Environment' in May 2013 to sensitize the community living around airport on a Peoples' Participation in Prominent Projects model.
However after seven months, the on ground situation has improved little with heaps of garbage piling up around the airport boundary, attracting flocks of birds. TOI did a reality check on Thursday and found that there were huge amount of waste lying in open near the boundary wall at Meghaninagar and Noblenagar that attract birds to the airport.
AAI along with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has organized many sensitization drives in the areas adjoining the airport, but has failed miserably as people continue to throw waste in the open. Also, the AMC dust bin is kept open where birds flock in large numbers. The special dustbins that were given to households are found to be missing.
