1.8 kg Gold Smuggling Bid Foiled

Chennai: Alert officials at the city airport foiled the bid of five passengers to smuggle gold and seized 1.8 kg of the precious metal, here on Sunday.
According to sources, during a routine check, the officials grew suspicious of a group of five persons, who had arrived at Chennai from Singapore.
After a thorough check, the officials found gold nuggets concealed in their shoes. The sleuths seized 1.85 kg of the metal from them.
The group had arrived from Singapore in an Air India flight AI 343 at 12.30 pm. All the members of the group were detained for questioning. After a a six-hour grilling exercise, all the five persons were arrested and remanded in custody.
