26-fold jump in gold smuggling at IGI Airport

New Delhi: Gold smuggling at the IGI airport is up 26 times from previous years with 177.6kg of the yellow metal being intercepted at the airport this financial year, according to information obtained via an RTI plea and official data.
Nearly 85kg gold has been seized by the customs department since the beginning of the year. Last year, only 6.8kg of gold was seized .
On Friday, airport authorities nabbed two Sri Lankans who were trying to smuggle out 20kg of gold worth Rs 5.25 crore. The two were travelling from Mumbai. "We intercepted the duo at the domestic terminal. We X-rayed their baggage and found two 10kg gold bars," said a customs official.
