812 foundation hails FAA downgrade of aviation regulator - DGCA

Mangalore: The downgrade of Indian aviation regulator - the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) by the US Federal Aviation Administration may have caused a lot of heart burns in the union civil aviation ministry and the regulator itself. But hailing this move is 812 Foundation that has taken up various issues of aviation safety in India post the crash of IX812 flight at Kenjar near here on May 22, 2010 that claimed 158 lives.
The US FAA exposing the gross inadequacy of DGCA to ensure safe air travel here on January 31 downgraded India's aviation safety ranking. India has now been put in category II of safety ranking from category 1 that directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) was in earlier.
Explaining the implications of this downgrade, Yeshwanth Shenoy, president of 812 Foundation, said DGCA will have to take a series of steps to bring about thorough changes in aviation safety in India. There will have to be change in laws, he said, adding DGCA will have to appoint staff to carry out its role more effectively.
