New Delhi: India's national carrier, Air India, has been hit by a new controversy. It has been reprimanded by the health ministry for selling electronic cigarette on-board.
In a letter written to the civil aviation ministry, the health ministry has stated that Air India has been observed to be selling a tobacco free 'electronic cigarette' with a picture of a model smoking through its discount booklets 'Air Bazaar'.
"The said display is in contravention of Section 5 of Cigarettes and other Tobacco products (prohibition of advertisement and regulation of trade and commerce, production, supply and distribution) Act, 2003, and further tends to put the government in an embarrassing situation. It is also contrary to our policy of using public conveyance for health promotion messages," the letter, a copy of which is with TOI, states. The letter cites a Supreme Court decision in case of Health for Millions Vs Union of India and others, and says Air India's sales and promotion of the product amounts to contempt of court.
