Gold smuggling: 11 arrested with Rs 1.8 crore of gold

Ahmedabad:  6.6 kg of gold, valued at Rs 1.8 crore, has been recovered from 11 smugglers caught on Thursday and Friday night at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. All passengers came to the city from the Middle East.
On Thursday night, five persons were arrested from the Airport with over 3.4kg of gold valued at Rs 95 lakh and on Friday night another six persons were arrested from Ahmedabad with 3.29 kg of gold valued at Rs 85 lakh.
Interesting all the 11 arrested were from Kerala and most were from Kasargod. In the last 20 days, some 14 persons were arrested for smuggling from Ahmedabad Airport by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Customs. Of the 14 cases one was by DRI, while the others were by Customs.
The Central government has imposed restrictions on gold imports since June 3 last year. The yellow metal is being smuggled through various means into the country, especially as gold is cheaper in Dubai and Sharjah.
