Mumbai: A woman who was flying from Dubai to Chennai to attend the funeral of her husband and father, both of whom died in a car accident two days ago, was so overcome with shock and grief that she turned violent on the flight, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Mumbai early on Thursday.
The 26-year-old, Dubai-based woman on Indigo flight number 66, which had 180 passengers on board, was intensely quiet and would not reply to any of the crew's queries, said sources.
"When a crew member insisted on knowing whether the lady was unhappy with the flight services, she turned violent," said one of them.
"She was totally out of control, despite the crew members rallying around her to pacify her," said an airport source. The situation became so bad that the pilot in command requested Mumbai ATC for an emergency landing, as the aircraft at that time was cruising past the city.
Emergency procedures were initiated, and Indigo flight 66 was allowed to land in Mumbai at around 2 am on Thursday. The airline security staff then informed the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Sahar police about the incident.
The woman has been admitted in Cooper hospital and her relatives have been informed.
