Vijayawada: Income tax officials were surprised to find four passengers from Bangalore carrying gold worth Rs 7 crore at Gannavaram airport here on Thursday. I-T authorities from Bangalore alerted their counterparts in Vijayawada about the "suspicious luggage" of a family travelling by the Bangalore-Vijayawada flight.
A thorough search of passenger baggage found 20 kgs of gold and precious stones kept in four big trolley luggage bags. Officials took the suspects into custody.
Officials did not rule out the role of domestic gold smuggling gangs behind the transport of huge quantity of gold ornaments through Gannavaram airport. Though Gannavaram handles only domestic flights, smuggling gangs in metros may have chosen the nondescript airport to shift gold from one point to another, an official said.
