Mumbai International Airport Limited put up a good show on day one on the opening of its new terminal T2 with on time departures and arrivals of first flights on Wednesday afternoon.
The danger of city's main roads getting clogged due to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena sponsored rasta roko was a concern. One of city's biggest taxi unions too had threatened of stopping its service at the terminal but putting these concerns behind MIAL managed a smooth transition of the international operations.
"Everything has worked with clock work preicision. We are relieved,'' said a senior MIAL executive. Air India's Airbus A330 aircraft carrying 110 passengers from Singapore via Chennai was the first arrival at the new terminal at around 1 p.m. and the plane was greeted with a customary water canon salute. A Jet Airways Mumbai-London flight was the first departure.
On an average Mumbai airport handles around 30,000 international passengers and about 190 international flight movements. Passenger movement is lowest on Wednesday and hence was chosen for the transition.
