New Delhi: The past month was the third foggiest January since 1964. With 435 hours of fog spread over 27 days, the average came to 14 hours per day. The month also recorded the second highest number of very dense fog hours. As a result, IGI Airport had to be shut down for 60-70 hours.
Delhi's foggiest January so far was in 2010 with 529 hours of fog and 165 hours of dense fog. January 2003 had 459 hours of fog and 168 hours of dense fog. "Spells of dense fog this season lasted from December 31 to January 1, followed by January 4-6, which was also the worst spell, January 9-11, January 15-17, January 19-20, January 24-26 and January 29-31, which was the second worst spell for the month," said Dr R K Jenamani, director in-charge, IGI Met.
