New Delhi: The deep resentment of domestic airlines with the civil aviation ministry's sudden move to do away with two key preconditions for airlines to fly abroad — five years' experience of flying domestically and having a fleet of at least 20 aircraft — has now reached the Prime Minister.
In a letter to Manmohan Singh, former minister and Trinamool MP Dinesh Trivedi has said the change of 5/20 rule (as the two preconditions are known) was aimed to benefit two foreign airlines that are coming into India — AirAsia and Singapore Airlines.
Trivedi has described the move as a "mega scam" and sought the PM's "immediate intervention" .
This knock on the PM's door comes only days after the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), a forum of all Indian airlines, had written to aviation secretary Ashok Lavasa opposing the ministry's move to change the 5/20 Cabinet decision, allegedly designed to benefit the new joint-venture airlines here.
It adds that the move will be "extremely detrimental" to Air India as the startup beneficiaries of this change could deploy flights to US and Europe where AI flies.
