AAI to spend Rs 10 crore for akharas, roads in Ajit Singh’s, son’s constituencies

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is girding its loins to build akharas, or wrestling halls, and roads in Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh and his son's constituencies using funds traditionally used to build public facilities in areas around airports.
Around Rs 10 crore, about 63% of AAI's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budget for the year to end-March 2014 has already been allocated to build a wrestling hall cum 'kushti' stadium in Barout, Singh's constituency of of Baghpat and for constructing village roads in his son Jayant Chaudhary's constituency Mathura. AAI officials familiar with these plans said Singh, who has had to wrestle with weightier issues such as the recent US downgrade of the safety rating for India's aviation sector and the underperformance of its national carrier, laid the foundation stone for the stadium on February 22 — weeks before the announcement of election dates and the kicking in of the code of conduct — in Baghpat, promising to produce wrestlers of national and international repute.
An amount of Rs 6 crore has been allocated for the wrestling hall, and Rs 3.75 crore earmarked for the roads in Mathura for which the AAI will team up with UP's Public Works Department.
